Dr. Ted Boyce

Dr. Ted Boyce

Thomas E. (Ted) Boyce received his doctorate in applied experimental psychology from Virginia Tech under the direction of E. Scott Geller. He served with distinction as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Nevada-Reno from 1999-2004, where he founded the Center for Behavioral Safety Research.

Dr. Boyce is currently President and Senior Consultant with the Center for Behavioral Safety, LLC. He remains a Faculty Associate in the Department of Psychology and College of Business Administration at the University of Nevada where he most recently taught a popular course on the Psychology of Motivation for Business and Industry.

15 Years of Experience

As a consultant to a variety of industries, Dr. Boyce has 15 years of experience in the design, implementation, and delivery of behavior-based safety improvement processes. His work has included behavior-focused safety analyses; training of management, supervisors, and employees; customizing training packages and implementation plans; organizing and coaching BBS steering teams; and assisting clients in the development and use of sensitive upstream measures of organizational performance. He is also in demand as a motivational speaker at safety celebrations and refresher trainings.

A Wide Range of Abilities

Dr. Boyce has managed both single-site and multi-site projects in behavior-based safety. Among those projects are customized implementations for Apollo Gold, City of Reno, Coeur Precious Metals, Day & Zimmermann, Freeport McMoran (Phelps Dodge), Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction, Intrepid Potash, Newmont Mining Corporation, and the United States Government. He has also consulted on behavior-based safety with Ralston Purina, Teichert Construction, Unilever-Best Foods, the United Space Alliance, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Nevada DMV, among others. As a result, his experience involves implementations in both union and non-union environments and with private and government entities.

An Award-Winning Expert in Injury Prevention

Dr. Boyce is an award-winning lecturer, entertaining public speaker, and acknowledged expert in the application of behavioral science to prevent injuries. He has logged thousands of hours doing on-site training for managers, supervisors, and front-line employees. He has also given invited speeches on the topic of behavior-based safety for the American Society of Safety Engineers, Association of General Contractors, International Society of Mining Safety Professionals, National Safety Council, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, among countless others. Additionally, he has published more than 20 articles and several book chapters on injury prevention.

A Member of the Behavioral Science Community

As a member of the behavioral science community, Dr. Boyce is Past President of the Behavioral Safety Network (2001-2003), during which he also served as Editor of the Behavioral Safety section of the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies website. He currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Organizational Behavior Management.

Dr. Boyce is a full-member of the American Psychological Association, American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), international Association for Behavior Analysis, and Sigma Xi, the scientific research honor society. In concert with the principles of applied behavioral science, Dr. Boyce’s endeavors emphasize continuous improvement, but are outcome oriented.
