I just returned from my first experience at the Southeastern Regional Mine Safety and Health Conference. I send my sincere appreciation to all those who attended my talk on the Psychology of Safety Leadership. And, I want to thank the conference committee for inviting me to present. James Spann, meteorologist for Birmingham's 33/40 ABC News, gave a particularly useful presentation on “preparedness”. Using the horrible rash of tornadoes that killed 252 people in the Birmingham area earlier this year as a backdrop, his message strongly applies to occupational safety. One thing he said really stood out to me. In describing the weather system he claimed, ...

Psychology of Management

What do you see in the figure below?    Some people see green arrows pointing right while others see yellow arrows pointing left.  And, both would be correct.  If perception is reality and people perceive different things from the same physical reality, how do you manage perceptions such that you can organize a group of employees to achieve the goals you want?  The field of psychology has produced many techniques that will allow you to reframe your message in a manner that will get everyone on the same page.   Dr. Boyce has packaged these ideas and many more in a Psychology of Management seminar that will truly change the way you lead in your organization.  Contact us today to ...

You Can Know in Advance What Impact Your Decisions will Have on Behavior!

The science of human behavior has a lot to say about employee motivation.  For example, did you know that if you offer a reward for performance regularly at the end of the month you will get a very different pattern of behavior than if you give the same reward for the same performance at different times each month. Schedule Your Safety Check-Up Today!

I recently had my annual physical exam.  This yearly ritual always reminds me of the importance of checking to be sure everything is OK even when there are no outward symptoms of a problem.  The benefit is early detection and simpler intervention to restore health if a problem does exist.

The same process can benefit your safety program.  That is, you should routinely check leading indicators of safety success, even when no outward signs of a problem exist.  To help you accomplish this, we are offering a 1-day observational assessment as quick, simple alternative to our comprehensive safety culture assessment.

The 1-day observational assessment process typically involves having one of our Ph.D.-level consultants spend a day
